The Way We Were
The Trenton Ski Club will celebrate its 50th year in January 2002. We have come a long way since our start in January 1952, but some things stay constant. The success of this longevity is due to the camaraderie of its members, a genuine interest in the sport of skiing, and the enjoyment of socializing, which is shared by all year after year.
In the beginning, a young reporter, Dick Burton, from Rutland, Vermont settled in Trenton. The adjustment to life in Trenton was difficult. Dick would spend hours daydreaming of the slopes he left in the north country. One day on his way to lunch, he observed a switchboard operator placing a call to Ten Acres Inn in Stowe, Vermont. What a jolt from his dream world! Dick lost no time finding out who had placed the call in hopes of finding someone who shared his dreams of skiing.
As it went, George Kuser, the caller, accepted Dick's invitation to discuss the sport over lunch. After a ham sandwich, a few beers and a most interesting discussion, they concluded that there might be other skiing enthusiasts in the area. A short story, placed on the sports page of the Times, announced the organizational meeting of the ski club.
The story, published and delivered, drew 30 ski lovers throughout the Trenton area, to unite at the Pennington Road Fire House and the first meeting was conducted. Thus the Trenton Ski Club was formed and launched on the slopes of success.
Today the membership, 300 plus, consists of novices, experts and first-timers. Beginning with opening night, October??, the club meets almost every Thursday night at 8:30 pm October through April.
Visitors are welcome.
